National Day of Action on First Nations Child Welfare

Please join us on November 2nd, 2017 from 10:00am to 12:00pm for the Assembly of First Nation’s National Day of Action on First Nations Child Welfare (#fairness4kids).

This historic event will take place on traditional unceded Algonquin territory on Parliament Hill. It will draw together youth, advocates and the general public to call on the Prime Minister and the Government of Canada to immediately and fully implement the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) orders on First Nations Child Welfare.

Students, advocates and other influential guests have been invited to raise their voices together to speak out against the continued injustice facing First Nations children.

In January 2016, the CHRT ruled that Canada’s provision of child and family services for First Nations children was discriminatory, and that it had failed to properly implement Jordan’s Principle. Since then, three compliance orders have been issued to pressure the federal government to act on the decision. Canada has applied for a judicial review on the latest orders, effectively slowing the process intended to provide services to First Nations children without delay.

Canada’s ongoing failure to comply with the initial ruling and subsequent orders is costing children and families greatly. The National Day of Action will help to draw public attention to this pressing issue and pressure Canada to act on the orders.
