Our Work
We focus our efforts in three key areas:
1. Prevention and Policy
We engage with individuals, organizations, and public institutions across the community to share good practices for preventing gender-based violence and supporting community-wide prevention efforts through feminist public policy.
2.Public Education and Movement Building
We challenge harmful norms and systems that perpetuate GBV and isolate survivors, while fostering collective awareness, action, and solidarity.
3. Amplifying front-line voices and survivors
We amplify and provide resources to those who work directly with survivors of violence, ensuring that their expertise informs public policy, strengthens community responses, and contributes to systems change.
OCTEVAW provides a network that bridges more than 50 local member agencies and individuals , all of which share the common goal of eliminating gender-based violence.
Our membership is made up of 35 local non-partisan, non-profit organizations, in addition to 10+ non-voting, participants members, such as municipal departments, academics and more. OCTEVAW is also proud to welcome many individual voting members.
OCTEVAW was born out of a need for a community forum to take action on gender-based violence. After the City of Ottawa struck a Task Force on Wife Assault in 1984, organized advocacy was needed to ensure task force’s recommendations were implemented, and momentum sustained.
OCTEVAW focuses its resources on public education, harm reduction, and survivor-centric campaigns. Our work is only able to continue with the invaluable support of our community. Through our countless fundraisers and events, we foster feminist communities while funding societal change.
We are believe in a world free from gender based violence. Learn more about the work of our member organizations, join us as a volunteer, or make a donation.

OCTEVAW welcomes participation and input from all sectors and from all people. We are especially dedicated to ensuring accessibility and inclusivity of all women and gender-diverse individuals, including survivors of violence.
